When you enter the CCAS holiday resort in Cap d’Agde at the end of October, you really feel a member of the Chess Family ! During 10 days, Capechecs (Les Rencontres Nationales et Internationales d’Echecs au Cap d’Agde) hosts around 900 players in various tournaments, surrounded by chess animations and jazz concerts every day. The flagship event, Le Trophée Karpov, has seen many leading players and world champions at the board since the creation of the event in 1994.

A spirit of show and innovation

The Trophée Karpov is hosted in the Molière amphitheater. This emblematic room is set up to welcome spectators in a silent, dark atmosphere highlighting the champions under the projectors, bringing even more drama to the fights on the board. Players are introduced before each game entering the arena with music and under the applause of the audience.

In 2017, after 28 fought games between the competitors, we introduced a “surprise round” with the support of the organisers. That was a celebration of chess between the young champions and the audience. Another way to enjoy our common passion – just have a look at the video below (from 15’28).
